For those in many areas of the world hunting season for most deer species is in the fall. For us in Europe the season is much longer. For me it’s the season where my time is spent reading about other peoples hunting adventures and not really being able to get out myself. When the sun sets at 5:15 and you rarely finish work before 5, there isn’t much opportunity to hunt. For me this is the transition to knitting season, and primarily hunting pigs on Friday or Saturday night… and the occasional driven hunt. It’s not a bad thing just a transition.
For fellow hunters from my home state it’s the opening season. The bow hunters have been out for weeks, and November 15th is the opening week of Rifle season My hubby travels to the states every year at this time and spends some quality time with his dad and brother. I believe this year was year 50 of them hunting Opening day together. Unfortunately I’ve not yet heard any news on hunting success… but it is just as much about the memories made.
I am spoiled and learned to hunt with my husband, so when he travels I don’t generally hunt. Although as I said before I can’t get out much due to timing. But Friday I was out to hunt pigs with a friend. Unfortunately it was an unusually quiet evening. I did not see anything at all for the evening. But it was nice to sit out and enjoy the quiet and night. it was nearly full moon so lots of light even in the wee hours of the morning.
I have been reading a lot online on Reddit about guys and gals hunting for the first time with their kids and such. It is such an enriching experience to spend some quality time in nature and end up with some good clean food in the freezer. I hope all of my fellow hunters have taken the time to spend some time sharing some stories and quality time.
I will probably spend more time knitting for the next months.
For those curious, I have managed to clear my freezer of skulls. Most have been cleaned, and degreased. 1 more in the beetle bin still and when hubby returns we will start working on the cutting of the skulls and bleaching to make them super pretty. Will share the results hopefully soon.
Enjoy the season! Those still hunting. Best of luck! I’d love to hear your stories.
Coming soon: Next week I will start the process of making some Roe Deer ham. Will share the details when it gets going.
