Mama Tendencies

Sometimes my mama tendencies extend past my own family. A few weeks ago by full moon I headed out with hubby for a nice cold hunt for wild boar. A huntress friend of Mine Kristie was out in her property. It was not a particularly great evening weather wise. It was near freezing or maybe even slightly below freezing and as hunters we like to sit with the wind in our face. Kristie messaged that she was freezing, her hat and scarf combination was not cutting it.

I have knit many hats in my day. But I don’t really like knit hats. They don’t fit my head. Either they slide up off the top of my head constantly requiring readjusting to keep it over my ears, or they fall down over my eyes when I try to look around in another direction. so I tend to just wear a baseball cap. and when it’s cold I have been pulling on a neck gaiter over my cap to cover my ears too.

I have been seeing some hood type hats floating around the Facebook pages and decided to give it a shot and see what I could come up with. I am personally a fan of wool. I know not everyone loves wool but in anything that covers your face it’s gonna get damp with your breath and so you need a fiber that will warm even if wet. This is not the case for any artificial fiber I know. So some lovely wool yarn was ordered and I broke out the knitting needles. In no time at all I have managed a hood/cowl in one complete with a drawstring to snug it down as needed. It is big enough to toss off like a normal hood… the cowl can be folded down to a turtle neck or up to cover up to the nose and ears. There’s also enough room to wear another hat underneath. Personably I like to wear a baseball cap when hunting. So the hood fits over top of that and I have the best of both worlds.

Because I am an overachiever too, I had to of course make mittens to go with as well. Now the next time Kristy is out in the woods… Maybe tonight she will be toasty warm. I have of course knit 2 of these beauties. The first one went to Kristy and the second one is mine.

What’s your favorite trick to staying warm out in the woods on cold days or nights? I’d love to hear your tips.

Coming soon: I am going to take inventory of my “Gear” and share what I love and don’t love about what I have.
